SOCIAL JUSTICE COALITION VACANCY

Project Coordinator: Design and Development Initiative
Cape Town is a city that remains deeply scarred by centuries of division by design. During Apartheid, hundreds of thousands of black and coloured citizens were forced out to the City’s periphery into makeshift and under-serviced settlements on hostile land. Today almost a million people – roughly a third of the City’s households – reside in informal or inadequate housing, cut off from the “city centre” and facing massive service delivery backlogs. Half a million people in the city still do not have access to basic sanitation facilities, thousands of children attend schools with overcrowded classrooms and dysfunctional libraries, hundreds of pre-school daycare centres operate from shacks, thousands lose their homes to fire each year and crime is an ever-present threat due in part to an inherently unsafe urban environment. Addressing these challenges cannot be done by any one stakeholder alone, but requires broad partnership across historical divides. Design has in the past kept us divided, but it also has the power to unite and improve quality of life.

The SJC is a Cape Town based community movement and advocacy group focused on improving access to basic services in historically poor and under-developed communities. Through our campaign for improved access to sanitation facilities, we work to encourage community participation in government policy formulation, budgeting, delivery and monitoring. Based in Khayelitsha with over 2000 active members across fifteen branches, over sixty partner organisations, and thousands of supporters; the SJC is viewed as one of the largest and most influential social movements in South Africa.

The SJC is seeking to hire a Project Manager - initially on a short-term basis - to oversee its activities related to investigating how design thinking can be used to accelerate urban development. The primary responsibilities will include planning and organizing a series of events in November as part of our Irene Grootboom Memorial Lecture Series, intended to foster dialogue across divides and ask fundamental questions related to development, design and human rights. The successful applicant will also coordinate the SJC's engagement with Cape Town's World Design Capital 2014 (WDC2014) project, and the "Design Storming" initiative. More information on these programs can be found at www.sjc.org.za.

  • Applicants should ideally:
  • Be a recent graduate with an undergraduate degree in urban planning or social sciences;
  • Have some experience in team management;
  • Have excellent research, analytical, writing and communication skills;
  • Have Logistics and event management experience;
  • Have some experience working with government, NGOs, and community organisations.

We are seeking to fill this position immediately. The successful applicant will be based at the SJC's office in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Contract will last for 3 months before being considered for renewal.

If you feel you meet the above criteria and are interested in joining a hardworking and dynamic team of active citizens working to improve conditions in South Africa’s most under-developed communities please submit your curriculum vitae and a cover letter or requests for further information to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
