Waste Minimisation and Recycling Interest Group Who are we? Waste minimization comprises any activity to prevent or reduce the volume and/or environmental impact of waste that is generated, treated, stored or disposed of. Our objectives:
To promote all aspects of waste minimization in Southern Africa. Disseminating relevant information to focus groups, general public and IWMSA members. Providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and best practices and promoting networks.
Our activities:
The IWMSA will, in its day-to-day operations and in the planning and running of all its functions and events, apply the principle of waste prevention – to demonstrate leadership in this as the first and most important step in integrated waste management. Waste minimisation and pollution prevention will be incorporated in decisions pertaining to e.g. suppliers, printing, travel, equipment, function venues, accommodation, handouts to delegates, catering at events, and all other aspects of its operations. By base lining its waste generation and committing to measuring and monitoring all waste generated, IWMSA will demonstrate the advantages of adopting the principles of waste reduction. Significant successes will be posted on the IWMSA website and quoted at events and in newsletters, to promote awareness within, and secure commitment from, members of the IWMSA and the public in general to the concept of waste minimisation. IWMSA will further promote the concept by incorporating the subject in its training courses and capacity-building events. It will seek to promote understanding of the link between waste prevention and cleaner production so as to support the notion that ‘waste’ refers not only to wasted materials but also to effluent and emissions, as well as to the unnecessary use of resources such as electricity, energy, water, etc. The IWMSA will also ensure that at all future conferences this topic will receive the required emphasis - in order to demonstrate its commitment and to encourage industry to follow suit.
