Partnering for growth: Competitive Cities. Graham Taylor, Spatial Development Manager for the Coega Development Corporation.

The World Bank Competitive Cities program has looked at two central questions, namely:
      1. What makes a city competitive?
      2. How can more cities become competitive?

A factor in competitive city success is building coalitions and resourcefulness. Successful cities tend to have coalitions between public- and private stakeholders in economic development. Where cities lacked capabilities for financing themselves, they can leverage the resources of neighbours and other tiers of government.
Lessons learnt from Baakens Valley

A World Bank assisted process of partnering for growth is underway within Nelson Mandela Bay with the Baakens Valley being one of the focus areas. Mr Taylor will present on the process, progress on the process, and the emerging lessons. Initial results indicate the importance of addressing basic issues relating to services including waste management, sewage, and storm water.  Areas of intervention have been identified with the view to expand the process of developing partnerships for growth.
